According to the scriptures, after killing Hiranyakashipu, Shri Narasimha took a bath in the Shipra river in Ujjain to pacify his anger. His rage did not subside and became uncontrolled. Shiva then took the form of Sharabha and tried to stop Narasimha. But, Vishnu and Shiva continued to fight for a long time without any solution. Thereafter, on request of all Gods, Maa Durga took the fierce form of Maa Pratyangira and stopped both of them due to which the violent war between them ended and the threat of destruction of the Universe was averted. It is believed that since then, Maa Pratyangira has permanently resided in Ujjain, and has been destroying evil powers and enemies for the protection of her Devotees.
