Tilkeshwar Mahadev Mandir, located in Ujjain, is one of the city’s most revered and ancient Shiva temples, associated with deep spiritual significance. There are two main Tilkeshwar temples — one at Pipli Naka and another in Tarana tehsil, about 40 km from Ujjain. The Tarana Tilkeshwar Mahadev Temple was originally constructed in the 18th century by the Maratha commander Sadashiv Jagannath Bhabe, while its renovation was later carried out by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar in Samvat 1727, as recorded on an ancient inscription at the temple entrance. This temple is famous for its Maratha-style architecture, ancient stepwell, and beautifully carved stone structures. The presence of Lord Ganesh idols facing each other in the temple’s stepwell adds to its uniqueness. It is believed that Maharani Ahilyabai’s army once camped at this sacred site. Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Shiva here removes sins and fulfills wishes. The temple continues to attract devotees seeking peace, purity, and spiritual enlightenment.
